Bark

American Beech, White Beech, Red Beech, Ridge Beech, Beech Nut
Fagus grandifolia

Fagaceae

American beech grows in the Pineywoods of Texas, in well-drained, acid sandy loam. It is a magnificent tree that can become massive within 50 years. It has a beautifully smooth, gray bark. To grow successfully it must have a rich soil that is moist yet well-drained; it will not stand wet or compacted soil. The fruits are easily recognized burs, and the three-angled nuts are sweet and edible. Its shallow root system makes it difficult for other plants to grow underneath it.
