Western Mesquite, Western Honey Mesquite, Torrey Mesquite
Prosopis glandulosa var. torreyana
Leguminosae
Western mesquite grows in the same type of terrain and soil as does mesquite (var. glandulosa) and sometimes hybridizes with it and P. velutine (velvet mesquite). It is the most widespread mesquite across the Trans-Pecos. It has a thorny trunk and branches and a loose open crown. The leaflets of western mesquite are less smooth and at least twice but usually three times shorter than those of mesquite.
