Quercus mohriana
Fagaceae (white oak group)
Mohr Oak is a beautiful, small rhizomatous evergreen tree that grows to around 20 feet tall, although it often forms shrubby mottes. It grows on hard limestone and caliche soils, and on dry limestone hills in the western half of the state. It is a midgrass and shortgrass prairie tree that survives in areas that receive 25 inches or less of annual rainfall. You can distinguish it from Gray Oak, Q. grisea, by its shiny, dark blue-gray leaves that have light gray hairs underneath; Gray Oak's leaves are dull gray-green above and hairy on both surfaces.
