| Whitethorn Acacia, Largancillo, Mescat Acacia, Allthorn Acacia, Huisache, Gigantillo, Vara Prieta, Chaparro Prieto Acacia constricta Fabaceae (Leguminosae) Whitethorn acacia is a graceful shrub with lacy, medium-green foliage and a spreading, rounded form. The white thorns which give it its name are conspicuous, rigid and very sharp, making it a useful barrier plant. In summer through early fall it blooms with round, fragrant, yellow flowers, followed by long, somewhat curved pods that are constricted between the seeds. Widespread in the Trans-Pecos, it grows in full sun on gravelly plains and rocky hillsides, and can be planted in shallow alkaline soils or caliche as long as it is well drained. Whitehthorn is very drought tolerant and cold hardy to 5 degrees F. It seeds out readily.
