Dense Ayenia, Small-leaf Ayenia, Yerba del Cancer
Ayenia microphylla

Sterculiaceae

Ayenia microphylla occurs in the Trans-Pecos and Western Edwards Plateau on dry limestone hills and canyons. It is a low, small shrub or sub-shrub with long, slender toothed leaves, very small reddish flowers, and round, warty fruits about 1/4 inch in diameter. The leaves, petioles and stems are covered with dense hairs. Ayenia microphylla is very similar to A. pilosa, but is easily distinguished from the latter by the felty underside of its leaves.
