Willow Baccharis, Groundsel Tree
Baccharis salicina
Asteraceae (Compositae)
Willow baccharis is widespread in the Trans-Pecos, growing on various soil types and often along waterways and irrigation ditches and in mildly saline conditions. It is native to the Southwestern Great Plains from Central Kansas to Southwest Texas. From May to July it has small tan or whitish flower clusters which are followed by plumed seeds. Baccharis salicina is smaller that either B. neglecta and B. hamilifolia, ranging from 3 to 9 feet high. It is closely related to B. neglecta, but the latter's leaves are more linear.
