| Tarbush, Hojase, American Tar Bush, Varnish Bush, Hojasen Flourensia cernua Asteraceae (Compositae) Primarily an inhabitant of the Chihuahuan desert, tarbush is common in the Trans-Pecos and south into Mexico. It grows in dry, often calcareous soils of plains, valleys and mesas from 2500 to 6000 feet. It is a much-branched shrub that can vary from one to seven feet in height, with small sticky leaves that have a faint odor of tar. It is often found growing with creosote bush (Larrea tridentata), although it prefers deeper soils. Tarbush needs full sun, and can grow in either heavy or well-drained soil. Small, yellow, drooping flowers appear in late fall, from September through December. The foliage can be damaged if temperatures drop below 10 degrees F.
