Halberd-leaf Hibiscus, Scarlet Rose-mallow
Hibiscus laevis (H. militaris)
Malvaceae
Halberd-leaf hibiscus grows in shallow water in East and North Central Texas into the Rolling Plains. It is really not a shrub but an herbaceous perennial whose stalks die down each year, with new ones emerging in spring. It can grow to 8 feet in a season, producing large pink or white flowers with a maroon center from late spring through early fall. Halberd-leaf hibiscus has distinctive dagger-like, 5-part leaves. It likes full sun, can grow in sand or clay with sufficient moisture, and can tolerate poor drainage.
