Marblefruit Prickly Pear, Bearded Prickly Pear
Opuntia strigil

Cactaceae

Marblefruit prickly pear grows in limestone crevices and rocky slopes at 3000 to 4000 feet, from the Pecos River to El Paso, and is most common in Pecos and Terrell Counties. It is a trunkless prickly pear which may be upright or sprawling. Its strikingly shaggy appearance is due to its numerous, brightly colored reddish-brown spines with yellow tips which contrast nicely with the yellow-green color of the small oblong pads. Flowers are pale yellow followed by very small, rounded red fleshy fruit.
