| Granite Gooseberry, Georgia Gooseberry, Southern Currant, Slender Gooseberry
Ribes curvatum
Grossulariaceae
Granite gooseberry is rare in Texas, preferring the dry rocky woods and slopes in East Texas, east to Louisiana and Georgia. This intricately-branched shrub has graceful branches bearing 1/4 inch red spines. The maple-like leaves are palmately veined; the bark is purple to reddish brown. It was introduced into cultivation in 1898. The fruit is sometimes used in preserves and is enjoyed by many birds and small mammals. It is browsed only lightly by livestock.
