Coyote willow grows near water sources of wooded mountains from 4000 feet to 7000 feet or sometimes on desert grasslands of West Texas, New Mexico, California, British Columbia, Oklahoma and Mexico. Its spreading branches bear lanceolate leaves which are smooth and grey-green above and have white hairs on the lower surface. The variety stenophylla which occurs in West Texas has very narrow leaves with more dense, silvery pubescence.
