Silky camellia is rare in East Texas but ranges east into Florida and north to Virginia. It grows on the rich, well-drained deep soils of wooded banks and hills. Its dark green leaves set off its exquisite 3-inch diameter white flowers bearing purple filaments with blue anthers. The petals are silky and pubescent as is the lower leaf surface. Silky camellia requires loam or peat soil. It has been in cultivation since 1752.
