This little river has had a huge impact on the development of the City of San Antonio. In fact, the river, is the reason for it's existence. Even today when the City at large covers over 300 sq. miles, and has a population in excess of one million people, the river is considered its heart and soul.

Along the banks of the San Antonio River, as it winds through downtown, there is a linear park with outdoor restaurants, shops, and hotels. This park is some 5 meters below street level and often it's only visible by the tops of the tall cypress trees and street bridges that cross it. Stepping down onto the banks of the river is like stepping into another place. Away from the noise and asphalt streets of downtown, this park is the San Antonio River Walk.
